Overview

What is cloud migration?

Cloud migration is the process of moving applications, data and workloads from on-premises data centers — or from one cloud to another — usually to AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud. But moving isn't the same as transforming. Copy a legacy system into the cloud unchanged and you often just relocate its problems, plus a bigger bill.

That's why our cloud migration services treat it as cloud migration and transformation. We assess every workload, decide the right strategy for each — from a simple lift-and-shift to a full re-architecture — and modernize where it pays off. The result is an estate that's cheaper to run, easier to secure and ready to scale, not just a data center that happens to live somewhere else.

As a vendor-neutral cloud migration company, we work across all three major clouds and recommend the target — single-cloud or multi-cloud — that fits your workloads, licensing and team, with the migration executed in careful waves to keep downtime near zero.

Migration strategies

The 6 Rs: choosing the right path for every workload

There's no single cloud migration strategy that fits every workload. We assess each application against the six main cloud migration strategies — the "6 Rs" — and apply the one that balances cost, risk and long-term value.

1 · Rehost

Lift-and-shift: move the workload as-is for speed. The fastest route to the cloud, ideal when you need to exit a data center quickly.

2 · Replatform

Lift, tinker and shift: make a few cloud optimizations — a managed database, autoscaling — without a full rewrite.

3 · Repurchase

Move to a SaaS product instead of hosting your own — often the right call for commodity systems like email or CRM.

4 · Refactor

Re-architect for the cloud — containers, microservices, serverless — where the workload justifies the investment.

5 · Retire

Decommission what's no longer used. Migration is the perfect moment to stop paying to run things nobody needs.

6 · Retain

Keep on-premises or hybrid for now — for systems not ready to move, or with data-residency reasons to stay put.

What we migrate

Applications, data and whole data centers

Our cloud migration services cover the full estate — application migration services, database and data center migration — not just the easy workloads.

Application migration

Move business applications to the cloud with the right strategy for each — rehost, replatform or refactor — and minimal disruption to users.

Database migration

Migrate databases to managed cloud services with data replicated ahead of cutover, validated for integrity, and near-zero downtime.

Data center migration

Exit or consolidate physical data centers, moving whole environments to the cloud in coordinated, low-risk waves.

Why migrate with Billow

Migration is where cloud projects go wrong. Or right.

The horror stories — blown budgets, weeks of downtime, a lift-and-shift that doubled the bill — come from migrating without a strategy. A disciplined cloud migration company is the difference.

Strategy per workload

We apply the right one of the 6 Rs to each system — no blanket lift-and-shift that carries old problems into the cloud.

Minimal downtime

Phased waves, data replicated ahead of cutover, and a rollback path defined first — a move your users barely notice.

Cost under control

FinOps from day one, so you don't discover the cloud bill is double the data center's after you've already moved.

Migrate and run

The team that moves your workloads can manage them afterward — no handoff to a separate operator who wasn't there.

Migration targets

Migrate to any major cloud — or across them

We run AWS, Azure and Google Cloud migrations, and advise on the right target rather than defaulting to one.

AWS

Migrate to AWS

Breadth & maturity

AWS migrations using proven tooling and landing zones — the widest service catalogue for almost any workload.
AZ

Migrate to Azure

Microsoft & hybrid

Azure migrations that fit Microsoft-centric estates, with licensing lined up to what you already own.
GC

Migrate to Google Cloud

Data & analytics

Google Cloud migrations, a strong fit for data-led teams moving analytics and modern workloads.

How we engage

From assessment to managed cloud

01

Assess & discover

We inventory your applications, dependencies, data and costs — and map each workload to a migration strategy.

02

Plan & design

A landing zone, security baseline, wave plan and rollback path — the target design and the order of moves.

03

Migrate in waves

Workloads moved and validated wave by wave against clear success criteria, with data replicated ahead of cutover.

04

Optimize & run

Post-migration cost tuning, modernization and optional managed operations — so the value compounds after the move.

FAQ

Cloud migration questions

Cloud migration is the process of moving applications, data and workloads from on-premises data centers or one cloud to another — usually AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud. Done well it isn't just a move but a transformation: workloads are assessed, re-architected where it pays off, and modernized rather than simply copied.
The 6 Rs are the six main cloud migration strategies: Rehost (lift-and-shift), Replatform (lift, tinker and shift), Repurchase (move to a SaaS product), Refactor (re-architect for the cloud), Retire (decommission what's no longer needed) and Retain (keep on-premises or hybrid for now). We assess each workload and apply the right one.
It depends on the number and complexity of workloads. A single application can move in weeks; a full data center migration runs over months, executed in waves. We start with an assessment that gives you a realistic timeline and phased plan rather than a single risky cutover.
We migrate in waves against clear success criteria, replicate data ahead of cutover, test each workload, and define a rollback path before moving anything. The goal is a migration your users barely notice — not a big-bang switch with fingers crossed.
It depends on your workloads, existing licensing and team skills. As a vendor-neutral cloud migration company we work across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud and recommend the right target — or a multi-cloud mix — rather than defaulting to one platform.
