Overview

What is contract-to-hire?

Contract-to-hire is a staffing arrangement where someone starts on contract with the intention of converting to a permanent employee if it works out — letting both sides evaluate the fit on the real job before committing. Contract to hire turns a hiring gamble into a decision based on evidence.

A bad permanent hire is one of the costliest mistakes an organization makes — in salary, lost productivity, team disruption and the painful, slow process of unwinding it. Interviews only tell you so much; you don’t truly know if someone fits until they’re doing the work alongside your team. Contract-to-hire closes that gap.

Billow sources and vets candidates, places them on contract so you see their real performance and culture fit, and manages a smooth conversion to permanent when it’s right — handling payroll and compliance throughout the contract phase. You get the confidence of hiring someone you’ve already seen succeed, and a clean exit if they don’t.

Conversion to permanent

A smooth, agreed conversion to your payroll when the fit is right — terms set up front.

Compliance & payroll

Hiring support

Guidance through the evaluation and conversion — so the decision, either way, is clear and clean.

Why contract-to-hire

Hiring is a bet. Contract-to-hire hedges it.

Interviews can’t tell you how someone actually performs or fits. Contract-to-hire lets you find out on the job — so you commit only to the people who’ve already proven themselves.

See before you commit

Real performance and culture fit, on real work — evidence, not a good interview.

Lower hiring risk

A bad fit ends cleanly at contract’s end — no costly, painful unwinding of a permanent hire.

Convert with confidence

When you make it permanent, you’re hiring someone you’ve already watched succeed.

No overhead in between

We handle employment, payroll and compliance during the contract phase — you just evaluate.

FAQ

Contract-to-hire questions

Contract-to-hire is a staffing arrangement where someone starts on a contract basis with the intention of converting to a permanent employee if it works out. It lets both sides evaluate the fit — skills, performance and culture — on the actual job before committing to a permanent hire, dramatically lowering the risk of a bad placement.

With direct hire, you commit to a permanent employee up front, based on interviews. With contract-to-hire, the person works on contract first, so you see their real performance before deciding to convert them to permanent. Direct hire is faster to a permanent relationship; contract-to-hire trades a bit of that for a much lower risk of a costly hiring mistake.

It varies, but a few months is common — long enough to genuinely assess performance and fit on real work. The period is agreed up front, along with the conversion terms, so everyone knows how and when the contract can become a permanent role.

No. The point of contract-to-hire is optionality: if the fit is right, you convert them to permanent; if it isn’t, the contract simply ends. You’re never forced to make a permanent hire that isn’t working — which is exactly what makes the model so low-risk.

During the contract phase, the person is typically employed and paid by us — so we handle payroll, taxes, benefits and compliance. When you decide to convert them, they move onto your payroll as a permanent employee, on agreed terms.
