Overview

Disaster recovery vs business continuity — and why you need both

Business continuity is the plan for keeping your whole organization running through a disruption; disaster recovery is the technology that restores your IT systems and data after one. They're often used interchangeably, but they're different layers — and a gap in either one is where organizations get hurt.

A disaster recovery capability with no business continuity plan around it leaves people not knowing what to do when systems go down. A business continuity plan with no tested DR behind it is just paper — comforting until the day you actually need to fail over and discover it doesn't work. Billow's disaster recovery and business continuity services cover both: the technical recovery, and the plan that wraps around it.

We build cloud disaster recovery on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud — backup, replication and automated failover — with recovery targets (RTO and RPO) set per workload based on real business impact, and regular testing that proves it works before you have to bet on it.

DR strategies

Four disaster recovery strategies, from thrifty to instant

There's a spectrum of disaster recovery approaches, trading cost against how fast you recover. We match the strategy to each workload's RTO and RPO — you don't pay for instant failover on systems that can wait.

1 · Backup & Restore

Data backed up to the cloud and restored when needed. The lowest-cost option — right for workloads that can tolerate longer recovery times.

2 · Pilot Light

A minimal core of your environment always running in the cloud, scaled up on demand during a disaster. Faster recovery, modest standing cost.

3 · Warm Standby

A scaled-down but running copy of your environment, ready to take full load quickly. A strong balance of cost and fast recovery.

4 · Multi-Site Active/Active

A full duplicate running live alongside production, for near-instant failover and near-zero data loss. The fastest — and priciest — tier.

What's included

Backup, failover, and the plan around them

Our disaster recovery services cover the full picture — the technology that recovers your systems and the business continuity planning that tells everyone what to do.

Backup & replication

Managed backup and continuous replication to the cloud, so a recent, recoverable copy of your data is always available.

Automated failover

Orchestrated failover to your DR environment — fast, repeatable and tested, not a frantic manual scramble under pressure.

Business continuity planning

The plan that wraps around the technology — roles, communications and processes so the organization keeps functioning, not just the servers.

Why Billow for DR

Most DR plans fail the one test that matters: a real one.

Plenty of organizations have a disaster recovery plan. Far fewer have one that's been tested recently enough to trust. Our disaster recovery services build DR you can actually rely on — proven on a schedule, not discovered wanting mid-crisis.

Tested, not assumed

Regular, low-risk failover tests prove you can hit your RTO and RPO — so recovery day isn't the first real run.

Right-sized to impact

We match DR strategy to each workload's business value, so you're not paying for instant failover on systems that can wait.

Cloud economics

DRaaS means enterprise-grade recovery without a second data center — you pay for standby capacity, not duplicate hardware.

Plan plus technology

Business continuity planning wrapped around the DR, so people know what to do — not just which server to restore.

Platforms

Cloud disaster recovery on any major cloud

Our cloud disaster recovery services use each platform's native replication and DR tooling — protecting on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments alike.

AWS

DR on AWS

Elastic DR & backup

Cloud disaster recovery using AWS replication and DR services, sized to your recovery targets and tested regularly.
AZ

DR on Azure

Site Recovery & Backup

Azure-based DR for Microsoft-centric and hybrid estates, integrated with the environment you already run.
GC

DR on Google Cloud

Backup & DR service

Google Cloud disaster recovery for data-led and modern workloads, with replication and orchestrated failover.

How we engage

From assessment to managed cloud

01

Assess & set targets

We map your critical systems and set RTO and RPO per workload, based on what downtime and data loss actually cost.

02

Design

The right DR strategy for each workload — backup, pilot light, warm standby or active/active — plus the continuity plan.

03

Implement

Backup, replication and automated failover built and configured on your chosen cloud, wired to the recovery targets.

04

Test & maintain

Regular failover tests prove it works, and the plan is kept current as your environment changes.

FAQ

Disaster recovery questions

Business continuity is the broader plan for keeping the whole organization running through a disruption — people, processes and technology. Disaster recovery is the technology piece: how you restore IT systems and data after an incident. You need both — a DR capability with no continuity plan leaves gaps, and a plan with no tested DR is just paper.
DRaaS is disaster recovery delivered as a managed cloud service. Instead of building and maintaining a secondary data center yourself, your systems are replicated to the cloud and can be failed over on demand — enterprise-grade recovery without the capital cost of duplicate infrastructure.
RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum acceptable downtime after an incident; RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum acceptable data loss. These two targets drive your entire DR design — how fast you must recover and how much data you can afford to lose — and we set them per workload based on business impact.
At least annually, and after any significant change to your environment. An untested DR plan is a guess — the only way to know you can hit your RTO and RPO targets is to run a real failover test. We build regular, low-risk testing into our disaster recovery service.
Yes. We design and run cloud disaster recovery across all three major platforms, using their native replication and DR tooling, and can protect on-premises, cloud and hybrid environments — with a single accountable team behind the whole DR strategy.
