Overview

What is data engineering?

Data engineering is the practice of designing and building the systems that collect, move, store and prepare data — the pipelines, platforms and models that turn scattered raw data into a reliable, usable foundation. It’s the layer everything else — analytics, BI and AI — depends on.

Every failed dashboard and disappointing AI project has the same root cause more often than not: the data underneath was wrong, incomplete, stale or trapped in silos. You can’t build trustworthy analytics or accurate models on an unreliable foundation. Data engineering is the unglamorous work that fixes that — and it pays off across everything above it.

Billow builds that foundation. We design and build data pipelines (ETL/ELT), stand up modern data platforms and lakehouses, integrate and ingest from your sources, model the data so it’s usable, and put quality and governance around it so it can be trusted. Then, if you like, we run it — so the data keeps flowing reliably instead of breaking quietly.

What's included

The pipelines and platforms behind good data

Our data engineering services cover the full foundation — from moving data in to making it reliable, modeled and governed.

Data pipelines (ETL/ELT)

Reliable pipelines that move and transform data from source to destination — batch or streaming.

Data platform & lakehouse

Modern cloud data platforms and lakehouses that store all your data and serve analytics, BI and ML.

Ingestion & integration

Connect and ingest from your systems — apps, databases, SaaS and files — into one governed place.

Data modeling

Model data so it’s consistent, performant and actually usable for analytics and AI.

Quality & governance

Validation, lineage and governance so the data can be trusted — and its use can be proven.

Managed data ops

Monitoring and operation of your pipelines, so data stays reliable without your team firefighting.

Why data engineering

AI and analytics are only as good as the data underneath.

Every disappointing dashboard and stalled AI project usually traces back to the same thing: unreliable data. Fix the foundation and everything built on it gets better.

Trusted data

Clean, validated, governed data means dashboards and models people can actually rely on.

One source of truth

Integrated pipelines end the silos and spreadsheet chaos — the numbers finally agree.

AI-ready

Well-engineered data is what makes machine learning and generative AI accurate instead of garbage-in.

Reliable & flowing

Managed pipelines mean data keeps arriving on time — not breaking silently overnight.

How we build

The data platforms we build on

We build on modern cloud data platforms and lakehouses — matched to your cloud, scale and workloads.

LH

Lakehouse

Databricks · Fabric

Unified lakehouse platforms that serve analytics, BI and ML from one governed place.
CL

Cloud data

Azure · AWS · GCP

Cloud-native data services warehouses, storage and pipelines across the major platforms.
ST

Streaming & batch

Real-time & scheduled

Pipelines for both real-time streaming and scheduled batch, matched to how fresh the data needs to be.

How we engage

From scattered data to solid foundation

01

Assess

We map your sources, needs and gaps — what data you have, where it lives, and what it’s for.

02

Design

We design the platform, pipelines and models — sized to your scale and workloads.

03

Build

We build and test the pipelines and platform, ingesting and modeling your data reliably.

04

Operate

We monitor and run the pipelines — or hand over — so the data stays reliable and current.

FAQ

Data engineering questions

Data engineering is the practice of designing and building the systems that collect, move, store and prepare data so it’s reliable and usable — the pipelines, platforms and models that turn scattered raw data into a trustworthy foundation for analytics and AI. It’s the unglamorous but essential plumbing everything else depends on.
Both move data from sources into a destination. ETL (extract, transform, load) transforms the data before loading it; ELT (extract, load, transform) loads raw data first and transforms it inside a powerful cloud warehouse or lakehouse. ELT has become common with modern cloud platforms because it’s flexible and scalable — we use whichever fits your stack and needs.
A data lakehouse combines the low-cost, flexible storage of a data lake with the structure, performance and governance of a data warehouse — in one platform. It lets you store all your data (structured and unstructured) and run analytics, BI and machine learning on it, without copying data between separate systems. Platforms like Databricks and Microsoft Fabric are common examples.
Because AI and analytics are only as good as the data underneath them. Models trained on messy, incomplete or stale data produce unreliable results; dashboards built on ungoverned data can’t be trusted. Solid data engineering — clean, integrated, well-modeled, governed data — is the foundation that makes everything above it accurate and dependable.
Yes. Data pipelines aren’t build-once — sources change, volumes grow, and things break. We offer managed data operations: monitoring pipelines, handling failures, and evolving them as your needs change, so the data stays reliable and flowing without your team firefighting it.
